Interview with Hiroaki Iwasa / HIROAKI IWASA ARCHITECTS WORKSHOP

What made you decide to become a designer?

Ever since I was a child, I have liked crafts and fantasies, I was moved by the profession of an architect, who creates spaces that make people feel happy and remembered with there own sensibilities and thoughts, and this is what inspired me to become an architect. Can you tell us more about your design background? I believe that design is about grasping the essence of what is necessary for the environment and people, and proposing something that is beautifully integrated through sensibility and thought.

How do you stay inspired and keep coming up with creative ideas? In order to remain creative, I think it is necessary to accumulate various experiences and thoughts, that is, both stillness and movement.

For example, it is important to always have a sense of curiosity and stimulate your senses by traveling, interacting with people, reading books, etc.

What does good design mean to you? I believe that good design can make people happy.

What is the most challenging thing in your profession? The most difficult stage is communicating the design to the builders while balancing design and cost. Therefore, we adjust the design and technology many times, and visit the site many times to communicate with the builders until they understand and can make it.It requires accumulated experience and communication skills.

Please, explain the best project you are most proud of and why. As an architect, I received a design request from a client for the first time, and when the Architecture was completed, the client thanked me for being so moved that I am proud to continue my career as an architect.

What is your biggest design career moment? How does this milestone impact your career? It was a moment when my client and I were moved by the completion of our first project. Since then, I have continued my career as an architect while feeling the joy of creating wonderful architectural spaces.

How do you learn and grow your knowledge and design skills? I am constantly improving my knowledge and design skills through absorption and hands-on challenges.

What would you say will be future of design? I think the design method will change in the future. However, the design itself is the sensibility and thinking of the designer itself, so I think that the essence will not change in the future. What are your career plans for the future? In the future, I would like to design a small but high-quality accommodation facility that integrates life, culture, art and cuisine.

Where can people find your projects and get in touch with you? For now, you can look at real buildings and products in Japan, or find them on the internet or SNS.
