Co-presented by Kaohsiung City Government and National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) and led by SHIH Che, deputy mayor of Kaohsiung, and CHIEN Wen-pin, artistic director of Weiwuying, the team produced one of the key lights of the 2022 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Kaohsiung: Weiwuying Lights Up: The Island of Memories. At Weiwuying, a national performance venue inaugurated for only 4 years, the south and the west sides of the building, totaling 381 meters in length, were used as large projection screen to tell the history of Taiwan.
In this show themed on “The Island of Memories”, the story started with the vast ocean. During the 17th century, Weiwuying was a wide, vital swamp, which was the rich hunting field of the aboriginal; in the more recent history, it became a vital area, and the sonorous fanfare represented the glory of the land, where close to one million men worked to protect our country. In this city of the aboriginal, the Hakka people, and new immigrants, the show, using love as a binding power, incorporated the rich culture and memories of this island to create our own glory and a whole new scenery of the seaport.
