Many of the suburban cities were originally planned in areas with low population density and land was widely available. Commercial activities were developed within super blocks separated by multi-lane streets with excessively wide medians. Over time, these street medians are not properly maintained due to budget cuts and various funding issues. As the population of these cities expanded, the land value skyrocketed as a result. How do cities satisfy the high demand for affordable housing especially in communities where land is extremely limited? The project explores the possibility of reclaiming the “unusual” pocket spaces and transforms them into housing and community nodes.
