The project is an 6,000 sf expansion of the 50 year old Humanities and Social Sciences building, located right in the heart of the university campus. The architect is tasked to create two story structure that will serve as the “main lobby” of the building, creating a lounge space for students to hang out between classes. In addition to the required lounge area, a multi-purpose room that will fit 100 people is also part of the program requirement.

The lounge area located on the first floor can be opened up to connect the existing outdoor plaza and seating area. Coupling with the entry canopy and the extended concrete steps, the entrance area can accommodate variety outdoor activities such as outdoor performances.

To preserve and showcase the existing façade pattern, a light well is created separating the 2nd floor multipurpose room and the existing balcony. The light penetrates the entire height of the building and brings natural lights to the 1st floor lobby.
