Children of Mountain and Sea

The best thing one can give to a child is the habit of reading. This project is a renovation of a public-school library. The designer draws inspiration from the environment, infusing the terrain features of Yilan into the design, where the city is surrounded by mountains and faces the Pacific. The bright and vivid color palette lightens the vibe in the reading space; the flexible space layout, on the other hand, makes the teaching process more spontaneous.

The continuous mountains and the waves of the sea become the disorderly-creative gate, symbolizing the heritage the school must pass on and the infinite expectation toward students. Upon entering the library, the light wood on the floor, the canary yellow of the walls, and the bright lights are designed to establish a spacious sensation, relieving the students’ stress from studying. The circulation desk area is big enough for the librarian to work, while readers queuing along with the desk, waiting to be processed. Above the desk hang the geometric lights which represent the image of uncut gems. The warm light paints the corner heartwarming, just like the love and care from teachers, gently shape the children to be their own.
