In the age of the e-book, the 225-strip bamboo book offers a different take on scrolling text. It deliberately adopts the form of an ancient Chinese scroll (4.35 meters in length), which allows for the depiction of a continuous narrative. Tradition and culture are symbols of thought, and it is important to pass them on to our younger generation. Thus, this book aims to serve as a platform for a better understanding of cultural materials and to provide our next generation with a delightful capture of the long-lost tradition of reading a bamboo scroll book.
This limited edition introduces the symbolic imagery of Hokkien architectural style temples. It combines illustrations and incisive texts about specific symbols and representative images of 3 centuries-old temples built between the 18th and 19th centuries. Each article explains the meaning, myths and materials of these symbolic images.
The lack of bamboo, the use of a laser machine to achieve small details and 6-point text and the right thread to support the weight of the book (about 4 kg) are challenges to be overcome in book production. Mainly by hand, each book takes five days to complete.
